The problem with I

I’m on the bus on the way to meet friends and I’m trying to squeeze in more new words in my novel. Not as easy as it sounds.

We all know the problem with editing as you write. The problem, the danger, and the temptation. It’s something I’ve talked about before and I know I’ll come back to it over and over.

There’s no solution and everyone has to find their own balance. Me, I’m keenly aware of the fact that I start too many sentences with “I”. That’s what happens when you write in first person, I guess. The trick is to ignore it when I catch myself doing it. Kind of like meditation, right?: let all thoughts just pass over as you stay in the moment.

That’s the theory. It’s damn hard in practice. I have a few more minutes on the bus so we’ll see if I can ignore all those “I” sentences and just. keep. writing.
